Richard J. “Dick” Miller, 87, died peacefully Tuesday, May 27, 2014, with his daughter at his
side at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
He was born April 21, 1927, in Hamtramck, to John “Jan” and Janina Miller (nee
Gontarczyck) and graduated from Hamtramck High School in 1945. He earned a Bachelor
of Science degree in fine art from Wayne State University. He served in the U.S. Army in
Europe, working as a butcher, a weather forecaster and in military intelligence, transporting
captured high-ranking enemy officers.
Mr. Miller worked 38 years for General Motors Corp. as an illustrative engineer. He was a
boss, a mentor and a friend to many of his employees.
He had many interests and hobbies. He spent many hours meticulously making perfect
replicas of miniature sleds, tables and chairs, ladders and other household items for his
daughter’s dollhouse. Gardening, building a rock garden and tending to the flowers in his
front and back yards while listening to Detroit Tigers baseball games was a favorite pastime.
He was a fan of opera, the symphony and he enjoyed going to the art institute. He also
stained and assembled furniture he used to decorate his home.
His family said Mr. Miller was a fierce and feisty Democrat and supported his party in many
ways. He rarely missed an opportunity to tell someone they were wrong by not being a
Democrat. He had a great sense of fairness and decency and longed to see a world where
all people were treated equally.
Mr. Miller is survived by his daughter, Janna Marie Miller Midura and her husband, Thomas,
of Chicago; grandchildren, Katherine, Alexander and Elizabeth; brother, Thaddeus Miller
(Dolores); sister, Halina Bielaniec; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Miller.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Casmer Miller; brother-in-
law, Harry Bielaniec, and former wife, Josephine Miller.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at A. H. Peters Funeral Home,
20705 Mack, Grosse Pointe Woods, with rosary recitation at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 9, at St. Paul on the Lake
Catholic Church, 157 Lakeshore, Grosse Pointe Farms. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. at the
church.
Donations may be made to the Democratic National Committee, 430 S. Capitol Street SE;
Washington, D.C. 20003 c/o Rosalind Chatman.
